What to Expect

Casa Milà certainly stands out from the surrounding buildings on prestigious Passeig de Gràcia. Nothing less than revolutionary at the time of its construction, the building didn’t only have admirers and its crude, white facade inspired the inhabitants of Barcelona to its still popular nickname La Pedrera (The Quarry).

Constructed between 1906 and 1912, Antoni Gaudí designed the building as one continuous curve, refusing any straight lines. Its rounded interior walls are decorated with mural paintings of flowers and plants, naturalistic elements, which can be found throughout the house in its wrought ironwork, sculpted stone columns and even in its woodwork and furniture. The design of Casa Milà made use of innovative concepts, such as a self-supporting facade, a basement garage and the stunning roof-terrace. One of the most remarkable features of the building, the roof exemplifies the modernist idea of combining functionality and aesthetics, and skylights, staircase exits, ventilation towers, and chimneys are sculpted into artistic forms.

But what was controversial at the time is now one of Gaudí’s most famous works and top exponent of Catalan Modernism. Recognised in 1984 by the UNESCO as World Heritage, Casa Milà attracts thousands of visitors every year.
