What to expect

Narrow side streets, hidden courtyards as well as majestic city palaces and open squares along with a dazzling array of bars and restaurants make up the charming atmosphere of Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. So come with us on a walk through the old town, discover a vital part of the city’s history and follow your guide through the quarter’s labyrinthine alleys into the heart of Barcelona.

Together with the quarters Raval and Barceloneta, el Barrio Gótico makes up the old town of Barcelona, whose many historic buildings stem from the 14th and 15th century, the city’s heyday as a naval power. However, its origins go all the way back to Roman times under emperor Augustus. In the centre at Plaça Sant Jaume, where today Barcelona’s town hall and the Catalan government building stand proudly vis-à-vis, the Roman Forum once had its place and the quarter’s Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia was built on the remains of a Roman temple. Starting in the late 19th century, the Gothic quarter underwent massive restoration works and, just in time for the 1929 International Exhibition, regained its original splendour, which still attracts tourists and locals today.
