Overview

  • Visit Barcelona’s most famous park with its monumental core designed by Antoni Gaudí.
  • Enjoy spectacular views over Barcelona from the park’s esplanade.
  • Have your picture taken next to Park Güell’s iconic lizard on the Dragon Stairway.

What to Expect

When construction on the park started in 1900, the area was nothing more than a rocky hill with little vegetation. Under Gaudí it turned into a playground for his boundless imagination that resulted in a very organic style of architecture, free of classic conventions and standards.

Inspired by the English garden movement, the park had originally been planned as part of a housing site for luxury homes by Count Eusebi Güell. That in mind, Gaudí designed a magnificent entrance with two pavilions as porters lodges and the park’s iconic dragon stairway, which leads past its famous, mosaic-encrusted lizard, today probably one of Barcelona’s most popular images. The architect’s design of the market is no less spectacular with a breathtaking hypostyle hall of 86 columns, which support the weight of the above esplanade, where large open-air performances were planned to be held.

Leaving the monumental core, Gaudí’s architecture becomes more naturalistic, using local stone to integrate viaducts, porticos and roadways into the landscape. Blending these necessary functional elements with their surroundings reflect Gaudí’s search for harmony between nature and architecture and turn a stroll through the park into a journey full of surprising discoveries.
