What to expect:

Built between 1906 and 1912, Casa Milà is a favourite with tourists from all over the world, owing to its eye-catching, irregular facade, which has earned the building its nickname ‘La Pedrera’ (The Quarry).

Gaudí’s design of the house, though controversial at the time of construction, is nowadays considered one of the most extraordinary examples of Catalan modernist architecture and was declared part of the UNESCO World Heritage in 1984. But not only Casa Milà’s facade has turned the building into a cultural icon. Its interior is just as astonishing and impresses the visitor with a unique combination of structures, forms and colours, inspired by Gaudí’s great passion for nature.

Many decorative elements, however, also fulfil a practical function, an idea essential to modernist architecture. Casa Milà’s breathtaking rooftop-terrace is the best example for this functional approach, as ventilation towers and chimneys were given the artistic form of warriors.

The tour through the building includes the Pedrera Apartments, where an audiovisual presentation recreates the life in Casa Milà at the beginning of the twentieth century. It includes the temporary exhibition as well as the Gaudí interpretation centre with models, photographs and videos.
