What to Expect

Although Barcelona’s modernist Eixample is full of architectural highlights and visual surprises, the Casa de les Punxes still stands out. Its six pointed towers, which earned the building its name ‘House of Spikes’, remind the visitor of a medieval castle, which seems to be taken from a fairytale.

Its history sounds a bit like from a tale as well, which begins in 1905 when Bartomeu Terradas, a successful textile industrialist, commissioned renowned architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch to construct three houses for his sisters Angela, Josefa and Rosa. The architect joined the houses’ facades in such a way, that they look like one single building and used towers, sculptures and ironwork to give it its distinctive medieval feel.

After more than 100 years, the house was first opened to the public just very recently in 2016 and attracts thousands of visitors with its unusual design. But La Casa de les Punxes offers more than just architecture and design. A tour through the building gives you the chance to find out more about Catalonia’s patron saint Sant Jordi and step into a world of knights, princesses and dragons.
