What to Expect

Opened in 1995, the museum’s collection focuses on Catalan and Spanish art of the past six decades. Its about 5,000 works of art range from examples of the abstract expressionism of the fifties, through European pop art, and avant-garde to works of art that exemplify the return of photographic figurative representation, and anti-minimalist sculpture in the eighties.

The museum is housed in a building, which itself is a piece of art. Nicknamed ‘The Pearl’ and designed by Richard Meier, its white exterior provides a stunning contrast to the surrounding buildings of the historic Raval quarter. The museum’s glass facade allows plenty of daylight into the building and provides an unobstructed view over the Plaça del Àngels in front of the museum. Across the square, the museum has an additional venue, a 15th-century chapel, where regular performances of video art are programmed.

Take your time and maybe even go on a free, guided tour. Experience the museum with the MACBA app, which combines virtual elements and augmented reality and brings art alive.
