What to Expect

Delve into contemporary art at the Joan Miró Foundation and discover world-famous works of art by the artist as well as by contemporary artists.

The foundation opened its doors in 1975 with the idea to give young artists a place to experiment with modern art and exhibit their work. Its Espai 13 has become a laboratory for contemporary art and a testing ground for experimental exhibitions. The building itself, designed by Miró’s friend Josep Lluís Sert, is a piece of art in its own right. Its avant-garde architecture combines rationalist structures with Mediterranean elements, such as roof terraces and bright patios and invites the visitor to take a stroll around this outstanding space, which fuses art, architecture and landscape.

A tour of the museum takes you on a journey through Miró’s life and work and gives you deeper insight into the artist’s vision of art. It includes a permanent exhibition of paintings, drawings and sculptures by the artist, changing contemporary exhibitions from the 20th and 21st century and the ‘Jardí de les Escultures’, the sculpture garden.
